Sudan/Darfur
The African nation of Sudan is in the midst of an internal conflict with a horrific genocide taking place in its impoverished western region known as Darfur. Government-linked militias have been slaughtering, raping, and looting the black African population of Darfur. The ongoing crisis has led to a humanitarian disaster, with an estimated 1.9 million people displaced and more that 213,000 people forced into neighboring Chad.
I am horrified that genocide is taking place, and once again, the world is not acting fast enough to stop it. These atrocities must halt immediately and those responsible must be brought to justice. The United Nations Security Council has passed two resolutions in response to the violence, but they have done little to improve the security situation. Additionally, the mandate of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) is currently too narrow to physically protect civilians in imminent danger. I am actively calling upon the U.S. government and our global allies, to pressure the Sudanese government to immediately stop the violence on the ground and allow humanitarian missions’ access to the displaced victims.
